Each year we hear about everyone making their new year’s resolutions and what they are working toward this year, more often than not those goals get forgotten within a month or two. And I have to say I am guilty of the same thing. Well not this year!!! Jamie and I have created a 5 year plan for ourselves and I have created a Vision Board to remind me what we are working towards. You may be asking “What is a Vision Board” and “Why do you need one”, well…
What is a vision board?
A Vision Board is a poster or a group of images that helps you focus on your dreams/desires. In other words a vision board helps you invest the time and energy to visualize your future and constantly reminds you of your life goals.
Why a vision board?
The key to a vision board is visualizing your desires. This can be very powerful once we understand how the brain works. Our brain is like a machine that is geared toward making us successful with every action we take. Our bain trains our bodies to prepare for action. We are preparing for action when we imagine ourselves doing that action. When we visualize ourselves doing the action our brain sends signals to the rest of our body to complete the action.
Therefore, visualization and visualizing our dreams is nearly as powerful as performing the action. When you visualize yourself living in your dream home, your brain trains your body for that reality.
By creating a vision board and placing it in a spot you see every day, you create the opportunity for consistent visualization to train your mind, body, and spirit to manifest your desires.
How to make?
You first want to start with a plan. Take some time to reflect on your dreams and what you want. Think about your values and your core beliefs. This might not come easy and it might take some time for you to figure out what your dreams really are and that is ok. Just don’t give up!
~Our best dreams and plans come when we are driving. So everything you see on my vision board stems from a trip we took and a dream that was hatched during that drive.~
- types– Most vision boards are tangible, meaning you can hold them in your hands. I chose to create a digital vision board because we are working towards simplifying our life and I spend a lot of time on the computer each day. So using photoshop I created a new desktop background for both my mac and pc. That way when ever I logged into the computer it is the first thing I see.
- supplies– If you are going to create a tangible vision board you will need to collect some basic supplies before starting. You will need some way to display your dreams; either a poster board, cork board, or I have even seen someone use an old window. You will also need scissors and glue. Whether you create a digital vision board or a tangible one you will need pictures.
- when picking images– The process of choosing what to put on your vision board is simple yet meaningful. First, identify your wishes or desires, then select images that represent those desires. What matters is that the images mirror your desires.
Once you’ve created your vision board, place it in an area that you see everyday that way you are reminded of what you are working towards. To avoid “not really seeing” your vision board, make a habit out of sitting with your board at least once a week. Simply take 10 minutes to look at your board, reflect on why you specifically chose those images, and revisit the feelings of happiness and gratitude of eventually having those desires in your life.
Now we aren’t far into January but I can already tell that my vision board is helping me make decisions. I have been creating and selling teaching resources for years, but now with the daily reminder of our “dreams” I am not sure how that fits into what we want to do, so I have been spending some time reflecting on what changes I need to make in my daily life to fulfill our dreams.
If you haven’t done so already I strongly recommend you create a vision board for yourself and display it somewhere that it will be seen daily. You will be amazed at how seeing a visual representation of your dreams each day will motivate you to work towards them.
Not only is a vision board a wonderful reminder of what you truly want in life, it’s a powerful motivator to enact on achieving your goals.
